Learning Isn’t a Bonus- It’s the Career Plan: Why Upskilling Is the New Climbing

By Joanna Martinez

“How did you end up in HR?”

People ask me that all the time — and the short answer is: I never stopped learning.

I started on the retail floor, not in a corporate office. I managed long lines, trained new hires, and defused customer meltdowns — all before lunch. At the time, I didn’t think of it as “leadership” or “operations,” but that’s exactly what it was.

What changed everything? I took a few online courses — some company-sponsored, some on my own — and realized I could grow beyond my role. I stayed curious. I asked questions. I upskilled. And when an opportunity in HR opened up, I was ready.

That shift wasn’t luck — it was learning.

In 2025, Learning Is the Career Strategy

  • AI isn’t coming — it’s here. Roles are evolving every quarter. Knowing how to use Slack, Power BI, CRMs, or AI tools can open doors that didn’t exist just five years ago.
  • Soft skills matter more, not less. Emotional intelligence, adaptability, communication — these are timeless and in demand.54% of all employees will require significant re- and upskilling by 2025, according to the 2023 World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report.
  • Employers are watching. Put yourself in the employer’s “shoes”. They want people who grow with the job, not just do the job.

What We Do at ETC

At Employment & Training Centers, Inc. (ETC), we don’t just place people in jobs — we help them build careers. That means matching talent with employers who invest in their people and pointing candidates to local learning and upskilling resources.

We’ve seen firsthand how lives change when people choose to learn — whether that means earning a certification, watching a free webinar, or just saying yes to a challenge.

3 Ways to Start Learning This Week:

  1. Audit a Free Online Course, from www.edx.org, LinkedIn Learning (30 day free trial), or MasterClass– sharpen your skills in Excel, AI basics or emotional intelligence
  2. Listen While You Work (or Commute), turn your downtime into growth time with career focused podcasts or audiobooks. The Houston Public Library has a large selection of free resources.
  3. Join a Free Workshop or Virtual Event, network, ask questions and learn from others.
